Ankle Sprain Issues

After reading some recent studies regarding ankle sprains, I decided to write some thoughts that I believe are problems with and associated to ankle sprains. 

First of all, in my clinical experience I have found that once someone sprains an ankle more than once they are highly likely to repeated/chronic ankle sprains. I feel this is a result of scar tissue and tightened ligaments causing the ankle to have limited range of motion and setting the joint up for a future sprain/injury. Once you get to this point it is virtually impossible to get healed or better without some form of therapy. So if you are in this situation, I would recommend getting your ankle checked for possible problems that need to be resolved.

Second, an article the other day I read suggested, with some proof, that hip weakness could also be a cause to the initial ankle sprain. This is pretty common in runners. We, as athletes, have a tendency to be so hung up on time and distance that we forget to strengthen and stretch the appropriate muscles that help our gait pattern. When we stand back and think, it makes perfect sense to work the muscles that help us walk and run, but do we? In most cases the answer is no and this can be a cause of how we get injured in the first place. 

 So where do you go from here? Well first, I always recommend having a good stretching routine in place. I am a big fan of yoga and other group type activities that help increase our range of motion and increase our core strength. Having a good weight work out routine in place can also improve our running, cycling and most activities. Overall, if you can start treating an injury before it ever occurs ( called prevention ) then you can do what you love without being done with an injury.
